Riverside District Office Holds Labor Law Seminar as Part of Employer Training & Education Program

June 09, 2005

RIVERSIDE -- As part of its ongoing Employer Training & Education Program, the Riverside District Office held a seminar on June 9, 2005 for its Riverside County employers on labor laws. Labor law refers to the body of laws, administrative rulings and precedents, which address the relationship between employers, employees and labor organizations. For private employers, there are a myriad of federal and state laws that they must learn to navigate.

The guest speaker was the distinguished Richard D Roth, a partner with the business law firm of Carney & Delaney, Chair of the firm’s Labor and Employment Department, specializing in labor and employment law for over 23 years. Prior to joining Carney & Delaney, Mr. Roth was an attorney with the National Labor Relations Board and was a Judge Advocate with the United States Air Force. Among his other professional and civic activities, Mr. Roth serves as an instructor in Labor and Employment Law at the University of California, Riverside Graduate School of Management and in the University Extension Division. He is also the author of “Hiring Practices in the 1990’s-Employment Under Pressure”. In addition to the private practice of law, Mr. Roth is a Major General in the United States Air Force Reserve and presently serves as the Mobilization Assistant to the Jude Advocate General, United States Air Force.

Mr. Roth held a lively discussion with our employers on a variety of topics concerning current labor laws. Topics covered included pre-employment issues such as “employee vs. independent contractors” and the recruitment process and post hiring issues that included wages, working hours, harassment in the workplace, Federal and State disability leaves and termination laws.

The Riverside District Office has already held employer seminars covering recent workers’ compensation reforms and the new Medical Provider Network. The Riverside District Office’s next seminar will be held July 14, 2005 on claimant fraud. This seminar entitled “Workers’ Compensation Fraud for Employers-Detect it. Prove it. Prevent it.” will be given by Riverside Deputy District Attorney, Paul E. Fick and Chief Investigator with Department of Insurance, Michael Ingram. Additional seminars this fall will be held in Riverside and the Palm Desert area….topics will include Audit Review, Loss Prevention, Claims Management, Return to Work, and Anti-Fraud Outreach.
