State Fund's Medical Provider Network (MPN)

If employees of State Fund policyholders experience an injury or illness due to employment, State Fund’s MPN physicians and other medical providers will provide authorized medical treatment.

State Fund’s MPN is made up of a group of physicians and other medical service providers within the state of California.

  • Some of the MPN physicians and providers primarily treat occupational injuries.
  • Other MPN providers specialize in general areas of medicine.
  • If necessary, the MPN will provide specialists to treat the injury or illness.

Using the MPN for treating occupational injuries and illnesses offers employers medical control for the life of the claim, with limited exceptions.

Employer MPN Responsibilities

Employers must notify each covered employee in writing (in English and Spanish) of the policies and procedures of the MPN. For compliance with the law, employers must notify:

  • Injured employees, at the time of injury.
  • New employees, at the time of new hire.
  • Existing employees, prior to implementation of an approved MPN.

Employers can contact their insurer to obtain available publications. State Fund policyholders have access to three publications (a posting notice and two brochures). All are free of charge to State Fund policyholders and available in English and Spanish. The MPN law requires that they be used as follows:

  • Notice to Employees posting. Employers must post this notice in a conspicuous location frequented by employees, where employees may easily read the notice during the workday hours.
  • Employee’s Guide to the State Fund Medical Provider Network brochure. Employers must provide this brochure to injured, new, and existing employees as specified above.
  • New Employee’s Guide to Workers’ Compensation brochure. Employers must provide this brochure to new and existing employees as specified above.

To ensure regulatory compliance, State Fund reminds policyholders to use only the new versions and destroy the old versions. Doing so helps ensure that employees receive the information that the law requires.

Regional Office and Online Assistance

For additional information, State Fund policyholders can contact their local Regional Office, which will also have the most current version of the Notice to Employees posting and MPN brochure.
