Fleet Safety Discussed at Free State Fund Seminar

November 27, 2007

OXNARD/SAN FRANCISCO – State Compensation Insurance Fund is presenting a free seminar – “Got Drivers? – Fleet Safety Seminar” in Oxnard on December 6. This seminar is a must for employers who manage a fleet of vehicles, oversee a mobile sales force, or simply have an employee run company errands. The seminar is designed to give employers the tools to establish a fleet safety program to greatly reduce automobile accidents and reduce expenses.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of work-related injuries. Every 12 minutes someone dies in a motor vehicle crash, every 10 seconds an injury occurs and every 5 seconds a crash occurs.

When vehicle incidents occur at work, employers bear the cost with increased operating expenses in workers’ compensation, auto, and employer liability insurance. Motor vehicle crashes cost employers $60 billion annually in medical care, legal expenses, property damage, and lost productivity.

The first portion of the seminar will be conducted by a California Highway Patrol (CHP) staff knowledgeable in vehicle regulations and enforcement, as well as general rule-of-road mandates. The focus will be to give attendees the tools needed to establish a fleet safety program for their business. With this valuable information, attendees will be able to draft a plan incorporating three basic components crucial to a fleet safety program: management oversight, driver safety and vehicle maintenance. Important California Code of Regulations (CCRs) regarding driver safety will also be discussed by the CHP.

The second part of the seminar a representative from Cal/OSHA Consultation Service will instruct attendees how to implement fleet safety into their Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Topics highlighted include: company safety culture, employee safety, education, awareness and safe operation of vehicles.

The seminar will take place at State Fund’s Oxnard District Office located at 2901 N. Ventura Road, 2nd Fl. Conference Room, Oxnard on December 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Registration and complimentary continental breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. Free parking is available.
