Contest source: "Insight" - State Fund's Employee Newsletter
The California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom is launching its yearly writing contest for grade school children. The contest is entitled ‘Imagine This’ and it aims to promote the importance of agriculture. State Fund has been a sponsor of the writing contest for a number of years. Farm Bureau Coodinator Brian Watson is working with the foundation to promote the contest. He said, “California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom is a product of the California Farm Bureau Federation. The ‘Imagine This’ writing contest is just one of several programs the Farm Bureau promotes to educate people about agriculture. The Farm Bureau has been working with teachers throughout the state providing curriculum and material about California agriculture.” Brian adds, “Fewer and fewer people understand agriculture’s importance in society. The contest gives school kids an opportunity to discuss agriculture and also gets them to hone in on their writing skills. This is a fun learning exercise for State Fund employees who have children in grade school.”
The ‘Imagine This’ story-writing contest is open to all California students in grades 3-8. Stories must be original, portray agriculture positively, and may not exceed 750 words. Entries are submitted regionally, from which two stories per grade advance to statewide competition. Statewide winners will be announced in January 2006. The official Awards Ceremony will be held in Sacramento during National Agriculture Week in March 2006. And there’s more. Winning stories will be illustrated, animated, produced on video, and released to media. All entries must be postmarked by November 1, 2005.
