Recent reform legislation authorizes insurance companies and self-insured employers to establish Medical Provider Networks (MPNs) to treat on-the-job injuries. Effective January 1, 2005, California insurance carriers such as State Fund may establish an MPN and require injured employees, with few exceptions, to obtain medical treatment within the network.
When employers channel injured workers to network doctors, MPNs can deliver several advantages. First, the use of the network can help control costs. Additionally, injured workers can benefit from network doctors and specialists who provide professional workers’ compensation medical care. A clear set of procedures governs the resolution of any employee dissatisfaction with treatment that may arise.
If you are a State Fund policyholder or broker, you will be hearing more from us about MPNs soon.
If you are an employee, please check with your employer. State Fund will be providing your employer with information on how you can proceed in the event of a work-related injury or illness.
